I won!

[General] To the dogs or whoever

"To the dogs or whoever" is currently my favourite Josh Ritter song.  Previous favourites have been "Snow is gone", "Kathleen", and "Leaves and Kings".  Should it be "To the dogs or whomever"?

To the dogs or whoever

I didn't get to hear "Leaves and Kings" last night, but he did perform both Kathleen at the first close (lots of fan fare) and "To the dogs or whoever" as the final encore, which he sang at double the already fast tempo and it was impossible to sing along as our audience did much of the night.

It was a great performance, and was spared some of the criticisms of past time's I've gone to see him; the first time, with The Frames, the speakers were "maxed out" as I like to think of it, and it sounded terrible, loud, crackly, and flat; that was with Shane, Leanne, and someone else.  The second time, the sound quality was better, but it was so loud I enjoyed it more from the rear of the venue; that was still an amazing surprise night and performance together, though now I wonder whether I seemed ungrateful at the time.  This time was the venue was perfect; the volume and quality and enthusiasm and crowd were all excellent.  I liked that the physical space was smaller and so was the crowd.

I would have had to leave after the first 40 minutes of his performance if I had wanted to catch the last bus home last night, so instead I let myself be stranded in K-W for the night and enjoyed the whole night.  Afterwards was fun; my hat receives lots of compliments and some people pet it without consent, people outside pulled me in to dance on the sidewalk, I saved a foam snowflake from being discarded in the garbage, and an hour later handed it over to revellers who I thought could enjoy it more.

I had briefly intended on a walking adventure from Waterloo to Guelph but cancelled that when the weather forecast hinted at ice rain; I love dry colds, but not wet colds that sink into your clothing (thankfully a regular experience my memory now downplays about my time in NZ and Vancouver).  The walk would only be 5 hours, and I've had longer.  I am in good shape and had water and bagels with me from Tim Hortons, I was well dressed and had sufficient charge on my phone in case of emergencies.  So, it was mildly disappointing not going.  Instead, I rediscovered much of Waterloo; a place I've been avoiding.
Mel's Diner, reborn
These aren't the conditions in which I necessarily wanted to revisit old places; there's a strange, simultaneous discomfort and comfort in them.  Most interesting of all the places I wandered would be Mel's Diner, which actually had burnt down while I was away, and has been rebuilt, much to my satisfaction.  It's known for large burgers, oreo and banana milkshakes, and being open 24-hours for the weekend (it was not open when I came by at 5AM Tuesday morning, unfortunately; but then I probably wouldn't have wanted to eat there right now anyway).

So, hooray for excellent concerts, for adventure, for snow, for life.

[Microblog] Transient Travel

If I am never heard from again, it may be because I am about to walk from Waterloo to Guelph through the middle of the night.

[Microblog] Transient Trip

En route to Waterloo to see Josh Ritter live for the first time in years.

[Microblog] Transient Tyranny

At a Lord of the Rings marathon, my enjoyment of which has greatly increased since drowning out all conversation with earphones playing‎ The Pirates of Penzance: Overture and other pieces connected to Gilbert & Sullivan.

[General] Theme update

So, I've updated my theme again. It's still black, but now it's snowing hearts     s!

[Microblog] Happy Velociraptor's Day

Another year, another link to my old Velociraptor's Day cards.  (There are a few heart-felt Halloween ones at the top.)

[Microblog] Red corpses

Yesterday I won a white rose and gave out three red roses.  I'm not a huge fan of cut flowers, but it was pleasant.

[Technology] GNOME Online Accounts works for me again

So, I never really used GNOME Online Accounts before; I have a qualm with its implementation, you see.  However, when I did try it, it did not work.  It turns out it's because I use Google's two-factor authentication.  That's bug 806635.  Thankfully for now there's a work around which involves creating an application-specific password.  Joy.

Another problem was that my calendar events always appeared on the wrong days and times, offset by more than just the ~5 hours for EST.  Well, that's because I apparently manually set Evolution to use New Zealand's timezone instead of the system time zone 3 years ago and never unset that.  (In fairness, I didn't notice much, as I usually use Google's online view.)

[General] Getting out of hand

So, a quick note on a complaint I have about some story telling.  My favourite story telling always features a good degree of restraint.  The story doesn't just go off on whims all the time, or try to include everything.  It puts limits on itself and abides by rules. This is especially true for science fiction and super natural stories.  A problem I had with story telling in elementary school was wanting to include everything that was cool.  One of the problems I find, though, is that the more you include, the more diluted what you already have becomes.  Also, since it's just a story and not being tested in the real world, it becomes easier to create contradictions or incompatibilities that can compromise the story's credibility.  I want a story to be credible so that I know it will be meaningful.  It matters if someone dies, unless everyone always comes back.

I use to watch WWF wrestling when I was very young.  It quickly became meaningless, though, when every few months, someone who was "good" became "bad" and vice versa.  There was no consistency.  There was no true character.

Likewise in some dramas, especially if relationships keep changing, like in soap operas.  It strongly dilutes the romanticised concept of "true love".  It makes it hard to trust that a given relationship means anything if it can be replaced easily, or connections easily swapped around.  In real life, I find it hard to care about a friend's relationship problems if they enter into new relationships very regularly.  (I do end up caring more about the person's underlying problems that drive those, though.)  I end up enjoying when a relationship brings to mind the concept of "true love", where I find a couple who treat their connection as a significant matter, and one where if there's trouble, they don't look elsewhere for a solution, only giving up when all reasonable recourse has been exhausted.  I am skeptical whether that's reasonable to expect from humans, but it's something I like to believe in a little anyway.

So, when I look at a comic book continuation of a favourite television series, and they go "all out" and pre-established connections are replaced readily, I get sad and reject even the original creator's attempts to extend canon.  Joss Whedon's comics must never be believed.

[Microblog] Transient Thought

Since a housemate is currently watching through Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I decided to look up what happens after the television series, which gets told in comic book form.  Joss Whedon should never be allowed to direct or write comic books.

[Microblog] Transient Thought

It has just occurred to me that if there were instructions on how to violate the laws of physics, they would probably be in book form and not searchable on the public Internet. Information wants to be free, but some information should not be free.

[Microblog] Buffy

So a pseudo-housemate has been watching a lot of Buffy recently, and someone made a snide comment about the amount I have myself thus watched recently.  It's interesting to think about how little context they have for my watching it, or how events in the fifth season were relevant to my family life at the time.
